The story begins in the mid 1970s, when Chuck Levin, “the Big Kahuna” himself, commissioned a run of wah wah pedals from italian wah maker JEN. In 1969, JEN had taken over production as the official Cry Baby manufacturer. JEN was the name in wah pedals, also producing rebranded pedals for companies such as Fender and Gretsch, and of course Chuck Levin. The quality of the pedals was stunning. The quality of the bags? A “lost in translation” moment resulted in all the bags being printed with the words “big chuch,” simply adding to the mystery of this limited run of wahs.
For our 60th Anniversary, the Big Chuck returns. As close to the original look and feel as we could possibly get, down to the bag. We worked with some of our most steadfast partners from our history to bring you this incredible recreation: Dunlop, Whirlwind, KORG, Right On! Straps, and Wah master Joe Gagan.
The Big Chuck Wah Pedal is as close to the original pedal as possible. We had one remaining original Big Chuck pedal in our vault, and with the help of Wah Guru, Joe Gagan, we nailed the sound of the original. Using special low noise transistors and handpicked parts – the Big Chuck reissue is as close to the sound of the original, with a few modern day “updates” to satisfy the current needs of today’s guitarists. First, we included true bypass; now you don't have to worry about your vintage wah sucking all the tone out of your rig when you aren't using it. Second, we opted to keep the modern bottom plate. Changing the battery no longer involves unscrewing all the rubber feet to access it. We also handpicked an AC adapter that matches perfectly to the Big Chuck allowing for noiseless operation. The casing is custom-made with a chrome rocker top, completely exclusive to this limited run of 60 pieces.
We had to keep the bag exactly the same as the original. Long live the big chuch!
