Ken Smith BSR5TN 5 String Bass - Black Tiger

Rock The Rare With This Ken Smith BSR5TN 5 String Black Tiger Bass - This Model Stays Limited By Nature

Ken originally acquired these Black Walnut logs around 20 years ago, slicing them up first and air drying all the lumber right there in his facility. Black Walnut is typically unfigured; only about 1% of walnut lumber has any to speak of. However, sometimes he will surprise a piece of rare Crotch Feather, Circular Grain, Criss/Cross Figure, or even a Flame pattern. Ken has “cherry picked” through pieces of this rare Figured Walnut to build this special model when he can. Enhanced beauty, construction and tone find their perfect match in this very Limited Edition Model.

These instruments will have the “NEW” Smith B.M.T. 3 Band Active EQ 18-volt Circuit with Internal 4-way adjustable frequency DIP switches for each band Including Series/Parallel switches for each pickup and Smith Custom bass humbucking soapbar pickups with fully shielded pickup and control Cavities. It is has a 34 inch scale, 5 piece neck-through construction utilizing Ken's aged hardrock maple; it's fingerboard is made from quartersawn Macassar ebony, with Mother of Pearl Top and Side Dots. There is a matching wood headstock overlay on this model along with an individually hand-fit scalloped brass nut. The bridge itself is machined from solid brass. It's finish is his Classic Hand Rubbed Dutch Varnish over Stradivari Gold Oil (“Ken’s Secret Sauce”).

Starting in 1978, Ken Smith has developed or introduced many of the innovations used on today’s basses which are now industry standards. Some of these include Printed Circuit Board Electronics, Graphite Inlaid Neck, Detented Balance and EQ controls, Low ‘B’ Design .128 and .130, and Taper Core Bass Strings. Ken Smith hand selects the wood for every bass from his in-house lumberyard, which features over 20 species of aged tonewoods, and is probably the largest single collection and variety of acclimated musical-grade woods in the world. Admiring of the techniques of 16th – 19th Century European stringed instrument makers, Ken Smith Basses, Ltd. has married together both Old World Tradition with Modern Innovation. Ken Smith himself still supervises the production of each bass and himself does the final set-up.
