The I-35 LC is the result of a custom laminated construction technique that Bill Collings and his R&D team developed in pursuit of the best tonal qualities of vintage semi-hollow guitar design. When crafting instruments designed to be used electrically at higher volumes, the resonant qualities of a guitar need a high degree of focus to achieve some of the classic semi-hollow guitar tones. The I-35 LC is the first of a line of laminate instruments designed to respond acoustically in perfect harmony with their electronics.
Through extensive R&D and critical listening, each Collings laminate electric guitar has been constructed with various woods, grain orientations and densities to have exceptional response and tonality custom suited to each LC model we offer. Low-wind Lollar Imperials have a slightly brighter tonality than standards, lending them an exceptional definition and touch response that communicates the harmonic content of the instrument beautifully. A combination of exacting PLEK machine leveling and hand fret dressing ensures consistently excellent playability and a silky fret feel. By meticulously hand-sanding between coats, our nitrocellulose lacquer finishes measure between .005 and .007 thousandths in final thickness, maximizing acoustical response while providing excellent protection. Collings electrics feature Gotoh SG301 tuners and Tonepros tune-o-matic bridges and stop tailpieces.
Custom crafted in house for each guitar, the Collings laminate line has provided another unique way to voice their instruments for superior response and tone. The I-35 LC features a custom laminate maple top, sides and back and an all mahogany neck, and is counted among their most articulate and versatile electric models.
