An original design by Fender, Walker and Sterling Ball, the first "StingRay" produced back in 1976 was a highly innovative instrument, albeit physically at least somewhat similar to the Fender Precision Bass. Radical for that time, it had a "soapbar" humbucking pickup plus an active pre-amp that was powered by a 9-volt battery.
Earliest versions used 2-band EQ (bass and treble). The range was later expanded to a 3 band EQ (bass, mid and treble), and then optional piezo pickups located in the bridge itself. AThe current 3-band equalization system made it possible to boost or cut the midrange frequencies as well as low and high.
Some of the other design changes that set it still further apart were the use of a heavy satin finish on the back of it's neck, to reduce effort for players, and the egg-shaped pickguard with a separate chromed "boomerang" control plate. Finally, its unmistakeable "3+1" headstock tuner arrangement made it immediately recognizable and distinguishable from any other instrument.
