JenniferBatten.jpg

The buzz on Jennifer Batten rose from the guitar underground, and the guitar magazines promptly began chronicling her savvy musicianship and highly original approach to the electric guitar in print.

At one point Batten was in 6 different bands, playing everything from straight-ahead rock, to metal, fusion, and funk. A major turning point came when she was selected from over one hundred guitarists to play in Michael Jackson's highly skilled band which toured the world for one and a half years playing for over four and a half million people. Jennifer wasted no time after the Bad tour's grand finale, diving into work on her own album with renown producer (and Stevie Wonder guitarist) Michael Sembello. The stunning results can be heard on Above, Below, and Beyond, the title appropriately describing the interesting diversity within. With this debut release, the world at large learned what all the excitement was about.

Shortly after the record's release in the spring of '92, she was asked again to join Michael Jackson for his Dangerous Tour. In January '93, she joined Jackson to partake in Superbowl XXVII's half time entertainment which aired to one and half billion people in 80 nations. It was the largest audience in television history.

She completed her second solo record Jennifer Batten's Tribal Rage~Momentum, just before she was again asked to join Michael Jackson for his 2-year world tour supporting his double album HIStory in 1997.

Jennifer's Tribal Rage project took a much different direction than her first record and is heavily influenced by world music. It is a hybrid of rock and very exotic sounds, including African percussion, Australian didgeridoo, Caribbean steel drums and Scottish bag pipes.

In the spring of '98 Jeff Beck asked Jennifer to join his band. They joined forces for 3 years on the CD’s Who Else, and You Had It Coming which were both supported by world tours. Other guest appearances include CD's with Carmine Appice, Michael Sembello, Carl Anderson, Carina Alfie and several rock tributes.

Jennifer has authored two music books and ihas just released her third solo CD/DVD entitled Whatever. With this 3rd effort, she’s ventured into electronica, vocal samples, and film. She’s supporting this release with a multimedia one woman show, playing guitar in synch with films projected onto a giant screen. The companion DVD includes over 90 min of art films, previously unreleased music videos, interviews, commentary, and an innovative guitar lesson.

Tickets are available to purchase online, or you can purchase one in person in the store (just see Sean Robinson or Brian Meader).

Latin Percussion Clinic

When: Monday, August 09, 2010 - 7pm-8:30pm
Where: WMC Clinic Room

Join us for a special evening with Santana percussionists Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow.

Every musician has an idol, a performer or group that embodies what they wish to become. From his childhood in San Francisco, Karl Perazzo wanted to play with Santana. "I used to play with the band when I was younger," he jokes, "but then the needle broke."

In addition to performing and recording, Perazzo teaches percussion. Along with Santana conguero and LP artist Raul Rekow, Perazzo starred in LP's popular instructional video From Afro-Cuban to Rock, which breaks down the complex musical rhythms of Cuban percussion. Because of their unique chemistry and infectious teaching style, Perazzo and Rekow are a sure-fire hit with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Karl has teamed up with LP to create the LP Karl Perazzo Signature Series.

Raul Rekow has played congas with Carlos Santana since 1976, participating in the groundbreaking melding of Latin, rock and funk styles that characterizes the band's history. For over twenty years Rekow has added his pulsating and colorful rhythms to the Santana sound that has captivated audiences on five continents. Initially self-taught, Rekow learned about Cuban percussion from fellow Santana veterans Armando Peraza and Orestes Vilato.

The combined duo of Perazzo and Rekow feed off of each other's energy and talent, resulting in a kinetic performance whether live in a clinic or on their best-selling instructional video From Afro-Cuban to Rock. Their presentations have become immensely popular because of the combination of top-notch expertise and an easygoing sense of humor.

Raul teamed up with LP to create the LP Raul Rekow Signature Congas and Bongos featuring a vibrant tiger print.

Marcus Miller Master Class

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from one of the true masters of the instrument in an intimate setting. Marcus will be here in advance of his performance at Wolf Trap on Wednesday August 18th.

Marcus Miller's combination of soulful groove and astounding technical ability has made him one of the jazz world's preeminent virtuoso bassists.

Fender's® stylish Marcus Miller Jazz Bass® guitar is soulful and astounding, too. It has an ash body, distinctive black pickguard/control plate and one piece "C"-shaped maple neck with a 7.25"-radius maple fingerboard featuring white binding, white pearl block inlays and a satin finish (gloss finish on the headstock, plus Miller's signature). Tonal magic comes from a pair of vintage-style Jazz Bass® single coil pickups; the two band active EQ has an active/passive mini-toggle switch. Other features include a chrome neck pickup cover, knurled chrome dome knobs on the volume controls and black Jazz Bass® knobs on the tone controls, a Badass® Bass II™ bridge and a three-bolt neck plate. Deluxe gig bag included.

Tickets for the Master Class are $50 Each and are available to Purchase Online or can be purchased in the store (See Sean Robinson or Brian Meader).

Marcus Miller, winner of the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2001, was born in Brooklyn in 1959 and raised in Jamaica, New York. He came from a musical family and was influenced early on by his father, a church organist and choir director, as well as his musical extended family (which included the extraordinary Wynton Kelly, jazz pianist for Miles Davis during the late fifties and early sixties!). He displayed an early affinity for all types of music. By the age of thirteen he was already proficient on the clarinet, piano, and bass guitar and had begun composing music. The bass guitar, however, was his love and by the age of fifteen, he was working regularly in New York City with various bands. Soon thereafter, he was playing bass and writing music for flutist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith.

In the past several years, Miller has also turned his attention to film scoring, composing for House Party (Martin Lawrence), Boomerang (Eddie Murphy and Halle Berry), Siesta (Ellen Barkin), Ladies' Man (Tim Meadows), and The Brothers (Morris Chestnut and D.L. Hughley) and Deliver Us From Eva (LL Cool J). He wrote and produced the old school hit, "Da Butt" for Spike Lee's School Daze soundtrack. Miller further surprised people by composing and performing the score to E.B. White's The Trumpet of the Swan. "I loved getting the opportunity to use jazz to tell a story to kids. Children have much more sophisticated ears than people give them credit for. You really don't have to play down to them. Just keep the music real."

The Gibson Custom Traveling Exhibit

When: Saturday, August 21, 2010 - 10:00am—6:00pm

The Gibson Custom, Art & Historic Division's Traveling Exhibit is one of the most exciting displays of guitars and guitar information anywhere around. The 40-foot "showroom on wheels" instantly becomes the focal point at any event it visits. The traveling exhibit enables the Custom Shop to come face-to-face with our customers and provides "hands-on" interaction with our instruments.

In addition we will also have the Gibson Montana trailer, featuring all of the top offerings from Gibson's acoustic factory. See legendary guitars like J-200s, J-45s, Hummingbirds, Doves, as well as modern guitars like the J185EC, Songwriter Series, etc.

It's truly a guitar junkie's dream: a showroom full of guitars from the Gibson Custom Shop, AND a showroom full of guitars from the Gibson Montana Factory, all in one place - and you're allowed to play each and every one of them! And that's just part of the allure of the Gibson Traveling Exhibit. If you're after historic reissues of vintage instruments, Artist Signature models, or limited edition works of art, we have the guitar for you.
